Welcome to Keepers of the Reef!

In early 2005 concerned aquarists saw a need for a local Reef club in the twin lakes area. Reef propagation and husbandry have now progressed to being feasible in almost all areas of this great country. Fundamentally we meet to share the ideas, successes and failures seen in our small glass encased worlds.

On a larger scale we protect the worlds reef life by containing it, propagating it and sharing it. Aquaculture of existing stocks multiplies one of the worlds true resources, its reefs while not further damaging its delicate structure.

The Keepers of the Reef has been established to unite these individuals.

Many of you are far to aware of the problems we have had with IP errors, Hackers, lost memberships ect.... Much of this is due to KOTR being basically an outdated forum module. When we speak of "Cycle" we are talking about a nitrogen cycle.  The food rots, fish waste, Bacteria die ect this is a natural part of a life cycle...  However, the byproduct of this event is Ammonia.  Ammonia is highly toxic to all living creatures..  In a "fully cycled" system we have at least two forms of bacterial colonies that when fully established will break these harmful compounds down into less and less toxic forms.

So here is a run down of the "CYCLE" in a healthy system

As I write this article my systems are for the first time in years, "Hair Free".  OK, so I have not really had a "Hair Algea" problem even though I thought that I did, more about that as we progress.  About 3 years ago I started to have horrid infestations of what I thought was "Hair Algea".  The infestation required scrubbing the rocks, frags and the tank each week just to keep it presentable and alive.  Then as the coral farm started to take off I began to see the problems there also .

We all know how important water changes are to the success of reef aquaria. It took me a little while in the hobby to realize that a proper water change requires some effort. Many aquarists simply mix up their salt in some water and change it out. Unfortunately, it doesn't work this way and can do more harm than good. Many aquarists use Instant Ocean salt. It is all that I have ever used and all that I know. There are many brands on the market and some are better than others.

We welcome all reefers to this site with open arms. This site is full of Noobie Reefers asking questions and wanting to learn, myself included. It is so important that we extend friendship and kindness to all of those we encounter. Rude behavior and demeaning attitudes will simply not be tolerated. So many other reef boards are aggressive, Bully sites and this site will not ever be that way I am so glad that each of you is here and are a part of what we have. I will do what I must to protect this Family of reef enthusiatsts. Can I get an Amen?

The question is much like asking a 6 year old girl, "Do you want a puppy?" the answer of course is an enthusiastic, "YES!". Early on the puppy is exciteing and the center of attention.. Quickly, the new wears off and that same puppy becomes an all to often neglected "DOG".
